About Methyl Ethyl Ketone

Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) is also known as Butanone. It is a versatile organic compound with the chemical formula CH₃C(O)CH₂CH₃. This colourless liquid ketone is known for its strong, sweet odour, which is reminiscent of butterscotch and acetone. MEK is generated industrially on a massive scale. It also exists naturally in trace levels. Its water solubility makes it an excellent industrial solvent.

MEK is mostly produced commercially by dehydrogenating secondary butanol. However, current technique involves directly oxidizing n-butene in solution with palladium and cupric chlorides as catalysts. MEK demand is driven by the Chinese market, which has seen many new production plants build in the previous five years.

MEK is largely utilized as a solvent, with the paint and coatings industry accounting for more than half of its demand. It enables a low-viscosity solution that does not affect the product's film qualities. Hence, it is critical for generating high-solids coatings that reduce external emissions. Vehicle, electronics, and furniture sectors largely use these lacquers.

In addition to its function as a solvent, MEK is frequently used as a plastic welding agent. In scale model sets it forms strong, long-lasting bindings between various elements. It instantly evaporates and generates strong bonds that are difficult to break. MEK is also used in the manufacture of:

  • Polymers and textiles
  • Printing inks
  • Adhesives
  • Insecticides
  • Rubber-based industrial cements

It also serves as a precursor to methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, used as a catalyst in the polymerization of polyester resins in fiberglass-reinforced products.

MEK is highly flammable. It is packed in drums and should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. For transportation, MEK is classified as packing group II and hazard class 3, with a flashpoint of -9°C and a specific gravity of 0.81.
